Study Information - Future Perspectives and Professional Development in snowsports instructors

Lessons provided by snowsports instructors are essential for guests at alpine resorts around the world. Many accreditations for winter sports instructors are divided into several levels and rely on the instructors continuing their professional development during their careers. However, motivation to continue participating in professional development (PD) may be lacking for those instructors who only intend to work for a few seasons.

We are looking for snowsports instructors from all different backgrounds and experience levels to participate in a study investigating how a perception of one's future career in winter sports instructing affects the desire to participate in professional development.

Purpose and goal

The aim of this project is to understand how a professional future time perspective mediates the relationship between intention and participation in PD for Snowsports instructors. We seek to understand how the perceived longevity of a career in Snowsports may influence instructors' intentions and participation in PD. Furthermore, we aim to inform current approaches to motivating instructors to participate in PD.

How is the study conducted?

Participating in this study will involve completing this survey at the beginning of your current winter season. The survey takes about 5 minutes to complete. Then, we will contact you again in the middle and again towards the end of the season to fill out a follow-up survey to inquire about your participation in professional development. No other participation is required.

Possible consequences and risks of participating in the project

The surveys do not extend into sensitive areas of instructors' lives. At any point during the research project, participants will be able to voluntarily withdraw from the study without any consequences. Even after participating, participants will be able to contact the research team and request that their data be excluded from the data and destroyed. Withdrawal will not impact your job or your relationship with Umeå University.
